Ace Magashule’s asbestos woes are far from over

Embattled former Free State premier and leader of African Congress for Transformation Ace Magashule has lambasted the judiciary for postponing the controversial R255 million asbestos corruption case levelled against him once again to June 14, 2024, ahead of the much anticipated provincial and national elections.

“Why can’t they just deal with this case and finish it? It’s (been) more than two years now coming here. People of South Africa think we are corrupt when they speak about asbestos, they talk about R200 something million, the money which in the public eye came to us. I have not even received or stolen a cent. It’s an injustice and I wish these organs of state were deliberately being used against us. We can’t even campaign,” he said this when addressing his supporters outside Bloemfontein High Court.

Magashule, the former ANC secretary general also expressed his disgust after the arrest of his former personal assistant Moraodi Cholota who was meant to be State key witness was arrested by authorities in the United States. Cholota who backtracked to testify against Magashule is studying in the US and will be extradited back to South Africa as a suspect.

“A poor girl is just studying there. The state said she is a state witness and when she refused to be cohered in signing the statement she was then charged. What an injustice. She’s supposed to be finishing her studies this year, alone in a foreign country. I’m sure that’s a bit tough for her,” Magashule said.

She will appear alongside other suspects which included Magashule , troubled businessman Edwin Sodi, the director of the company, Blackhead Consultants, former Free State Human Settlement MEC Olly Mlamleli was also absent from the Bloemfontein High Court on Monday.

ACT leader Magashule, is facing 21 counts of fraud, money laundering and corruption relating to a R255 million asbestos contract in 2014.
