ANC Gauteng provincial chairperson and Premier Panyaza Lesufi has survived ANC reconfigured axes after he was given another chance to be a co-convener with former Johannesburg Mayor Amos Masondo.

Hope Papo, former Gauteng’s secretary has been appointed as province coordinator while ANC provincial secretary TK Nciza was axed to be an ordinary PEC member in a bid to rescue GP structures.

Mabuyakhulu, who stepped aside from his role as deputy provincial chairperson in the face of corruption allegations but has since been acquitted, took on the role of coordinator in KZN. Papo, who previously served as Gauteng’s secretary, was appointed as its coordinator.

Former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Jeff Radebe has been appointed to lead KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) as part of the ANC to resuscitate itself after performing poorly in the previous local and national elections.

Mike Mabuyakhulu who stepped aside from his role as deputy provincial chairperson in the face of corruption allegations but has since been acquitted, will take on the role of coordinator in KZN.

ANC's Siboniso Duma survived the grinding sharp ANC leadership axe, and his ally ANC KwaZulu-Natal secretary Bheki Mtolo was removed.

This decision was taken after the ANC national leadership met on Monday to discuss the reconfiguration in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng as part of the party’s renewal efforts.

The ANC won 40 percent of the vote, falling from 57% in 2019. The ANC in GP won 34.76% of the May 29 provincial ballot, compared with 50.2% five years ago. The Democratic Alliance, which supported Lesufi’s nomination, got 27.4% of the vote and the Economic Freedom Fighters 12.9%. KZN got 17% electoral support. The ANC last year won 40 percent of the vote, falling from 57% in 2019.

ANC sources from Gauteng said removing Lesufi was going to hurt the ANC in the province because he is a consummate leader. ANC KZN sources said Mtolo was unfortunate because of the MK Party which supported former controversial ANC Jacob Zuma who is a political narcissist.
