ANC national leadership led by President Cyril Ramaphosa has shown confidence in Panyaza Lesufi as a political leader and Gauteng Premier.
He was appointed as the co-Convenor with veteran politician Amos Masondo, the former Johannesburg Mayor.
This was cemented by ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula during the much-anticipated media briefing geared to announce the new leadership of the ANC Provincial Task Team (PTT) was held in Midrand on Wednesday.
He added that the ANC leadership was also impressed by Lesufi’s 2025 State of the Province Address which was superb and equal to the task of improving the lives of the community. Mbalula said Lesufi is a consummate leader who is equal to the task trusted by the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC).
Lesufi accepted his new mandate and thanked the NEC led by President Ramaphosa for having confidence in his leadership.
The ANC won 40 percent of the vote, falling from 57% in 2019. The ANC in GP won 34.76% of the May 29 provincial ballot, compared with 50.2% five years ago. The Democratic Alliance, which supported Lesufi’s nomination, got 27.4% of the vote and the Economic Freedom Fighters 12.9%. KZN got 17% electoral support.
This gave birth to the ANC to subject Gauteng and KZN to reconfiguration, which is essentially a disbandment of the provincial executive committee (PEC). Ntombi Mekgwe, former Gauteng speaker is the deputy convener, while former MEC of health in Gauteng and provincial ANC secretary Hope Papo was appointed as the coordinator, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will be his deputy, and Tasneem Motara will be the fundraiser.
Mbalula defended the ANC for deploying veterans to be part of the Gauteng PPT which has raised eyebrows and discontentment to some leaders who were removed from their positions and ordinary ANC membership.
"When you don’t understand things, there are people you ask, we will never leave our veterans behind, and they are a source of inspiration, wisdom and decorum. We are not a party of young boys, we have old grannies, and we will turn to them in our moment of confusion and need," Mbalula stressed that the ANC was the only party with a history and veterans which is 113years old.
"It took us a bit of time to outline the content of the business of the newly inaugurated provincial task team. This process was concluded with our structures in the five regions of Gauteng, which were briefed last weekend about the decision of the national executive committee (NEC). Our structures throughout the province of Gauteng welcomed the decision of the NEC in relation to reconfiguration of the province."
He however admitted that indeed there were skirmishes here and there by those who are ill-disciplined. Mbalula also applauded ANC members who subjected themselves to discipline to ensure that the former ruling party claims its former glory. Axed Gauteng Provincial Secretary TK was tasked to be part of the provincial task team as convener of policy, monitoring and evaluation. He however snubbed the media briefing. Mbalula said the ANC will continue to pay his salary until the end of his term in office. Gauteng ANC provincial spokesperson Lebogang Makhubela was replaced by Mzi Khumalo.
Meanwhile, the ANC on Tuesday unveiled their KZN PPT to be led by former veteran Minister Jeff Radebe as the convenor while former Provincial chairperson Siboniso Duma has been demoted to second deputy co-ordinator and former provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo has been removed from top leadership. He will oversee the policy, monitoring and evaluation subcommittee.
