Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality under the leadership of its Executive Mayor Given Moimane is under the microscope over incomplete Mamphokgo Stadium which cost taxpayers R37 million.
The municipality leadership has failed to give concrete reasons despite promising the public that they will respond accordingly about three years ago, January 31, 2022.
Bolsheviks Party national secretary Seun Mogotji has lambasted Mayor Moimane and his administration for drastically failing to remedy the situation and take action against those responsible for milking the municipality purse without completing the much-anticipated project meant to improve the lives of the community.
“This issue of the incomplete Mamphokgo stadium is really disturbing and what makes it worse and more painful is that the leadership of Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality doesn't show any remorse, they see absolutely nothing wrong with blowing R37 million of taxpayers’ money over an incomplete stadium which can be best suited to be a cattle kraal. It's been two years since we are waiting for a response on this matter, but the municipality has buried their heads in the sand and hopes we will forget but we won't. Someone must account, the contractor who did this shabby job must either complete the stadium or pay back a percentage of the money paid to him for the project,” Mogotji said.
Mogotji told The Azanian that he will engage the newly appointed Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie to investigate the matter and ensure that there is accountability on the matter.
“This stadium will remove the youth from social ills like drugs, crime and teenage pregnancies. We are going to speak to Minister McKenzie to root-out this corruption and people must account. We will not handle this matter with soft gloves but with iron fists. The Mayor and his administration must account. This is taxpayers' money and I put it to you we will not leave any stone unturned,” Bolsheviks Party said.
"The great Nelson Mandela once said, “Sport has the power to change the world, it has the power to inspire.” He added, “It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair." We believe in you Minister McKenzie, your ability and determination to work towards the improvement of the lives of our people, especially the youth, please help the people of Mamphokgo, especially the youth, to have a brighter future through sports. The intervention of your office in this regard will be highly appreciated.”
“Through their spokesperson it was said that they will respond in "due time”, when is that because this vague response was given on 31 January 2022, and we are still waiting for that "due time". Is there even a plan to recover money from that contractor who was fully paid despite doing half the job or as usual no one cares? We can't be quiet while public money meant for service delivery is being squandered like that. Someone must account for that wasteful expenditure. It can't be business as usual; we need to see some serious consequence management. If the municipality does not want to resolve this matter, we will be forced to go the legal route to force them to take action, why would anyone in their sane and sober mind authorise payment of a contractor who did such a shabby job? We demand answers on this matter.”
Spokesperson for the municipality Percy Moagi didn't respond to The Azanian questions despite sending him questions last week.
