Polokwane Mayor John Makoro Mpe has been applauded by members of the community for enhancing their lives in Polokwane.
Mpe’s leadership has recently ensured that the Seshego Stadium is now hosting professional PSL matches after 23 years following approval from the PSL. The stadium is Magesi FC homeground.
Mayor Mpe expressed his contentment that the stadium boasts a rich history, having hosted professional matches. It has been a playground to legendary teams such as Ria Stars, Winners Park, and Stone Breakers, and has witnessed the talents of renowned footballers such as Trot Moloto, Joseph “Lejose” Tshabalala, Lucas "Masterpiece" Moripe and many more.
“We are proud to have a Mayor who has improved our lives. I mean now we can see some PSL games especially at our doorstep,” said Samson Malete from Zone 1 Seshego. Thabo Lebea from Seshego Zone 3 said: “Mayor Mpe is always practicing what he sermonises. He is a man of his words who has enhanced our lives.”
The stadium has a safe seating capacity of 5,000, though it can accommodate up to 7,500 people, including service providers, during special events.
In recognition of the stadium’s historical significance and its role in local football development, Polokwane Municipality has allocated R19 million over a two-year period for renovations as part of its commitment to maintaining quality sporting infrastructure for both professional and community use. “These upgrades are aimed at restoring the stadium to its former glory, ensuring it continues to serve as a hub for sporting excellence and community engagement,” Mpe said.
Forces of doom and gloom who disrupted the first game of Chippa United and Magesi FC ate a humble pie after the Tuesday game was postponed to Wednesday at 12h00 went well. “We are glad that those who were responsible for disrupting the game failed drastically and ate their humble pie. We urged Mayor Mpe to investigate this thoroughly and those responsible must account. We will not allow agitators and jealous people to do their evil things here. We will protect our Mayor and our municipality without trepidation,” said members of the community who urged to leave no stone unturned.
Chippa United thrashed Magesi FC 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon, after the clash had been abandoned the night before the Seshego Stadium. The win takes Chippa up to 11th position on the Betway Premiership table, while Magesi remain rooted to the foot of the table with just one win from 15 matches
Meanwhile, Polokwane Mayor Mpe continues to silence his critics by leading Polokwane Municipality to win the ANC ZK Mathews Award for the best performing Municipality and Caucus in the country in 2024.
This achievement was announced officially during the ANC January 8 anniversary celebrations at the Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on 11 January 2024.
This announcement happens barely a month after President Cyril Ramaphosa gave thumbs up to Polokwane Mayor Mpe for leading a clean municipality during his recent visit to Polokwane Municipality.
