Well known general practitioner Dr Mmameno Pataki from the Capricorn district in Limpopo has been rewarded for her sterling work of assisting the community.
The Limpopo Independence Practitioners Association (LIPA) an association of medical practitioners in private practice awarded her with the Best Community Doctor Award for responding to the need and caring for the community without trepidation.
The Limpopo Medical Awards were recently held at Saskia Hotel in Polokwane during LIPA’s award ceremony gala dinner which was capacitated by private medical practitioners in Limpopo.
Dr Mmameno Ngwana-Maja married to celebrated Reverend Mautji Pataki blessed with a(pigeon pair) daughter, son and one grand-daughter has touched the hearts of the community of Lebowakgomo and Ga-Maja for working tirelessly for 16 and 4 years respectively with her love for treating patients with respect and honour as well as ensuring that their medical conditions are remedied or dealt with to the best of her ability. Dr Pataki’s practise is always flocked with patients who trust her because they experienced her understanding of the medical sector as a general practitioner.
A patient who opted to remain anonymous said: “At some stage, I felt that will not see another day because my condition was extremely bad. I couldn’t walk properly and felt like soon will be dead should I don’t get help as I didn’t want to go to consult at the hospital first. I went to see Dr Pataki and she saved my life. I didn’t know I had chronic decease and my whole body was in pain. She examined me and gave me the correct medication. To this day, I’ll forever be grateful for I’m better. I’m not surprised that she scooped the Best Community Doctor Award.”
Another patient said: “My daughter was very sick. Her temperature was very high. I was so afraid because she wasn’t eating well. She was vomiting and weak. She assisted my child. From that day, I don’t make any mistake of taking my daughter to any doctor except her. She deserves the Best Community Doctor Award that she won.”
Dr Mmameno Ngwana-Maja Pataki was born at GaMaja Staseng village within the Capricorn District of Limpopo. She matriculated at Makgoka High School and graduated with BSc(Paed) and MBChb degrees at the University of the North, now University of Limpopo and Medical University of Southern Africa now Sefako Makgatho University, respectively.
She taught at Bokamoso and Lebowakgomo High Schools and Thabamoopo College of Education and served as an intern and community service doctor at Groothoek hospital before proceeding to Lebowakgomo hospital where she served as medical officer, senior medical officer and later principal medical officer.
She also did special courses in HIV and AIDS management where her interest and passion is and she had been a regular participant at the National and International Conference on HIV and AIDS/ TB. Dr Pataki was nominated and appointed a member of the World Council of Churches (WCC) committee convener on HIV and AIDS - Africa Region. Dr Pataki was appointed to represent the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa on Tumekutana project of the World Communion of Reformed Churches.
“I’m a member of the Bridebuilders Women Project of the Presbyterian Church globally who is known for involvement in community and social activism as an advocate of the deprived and those challenged by the high levels of poverty. Given time I provide meals for vulnerable community around Polokwane on Sundays. In relation to educational support, I assisted a number of students/ learners to enrol for medicine, engineering, teaching, Bcoms etc in some of the South African Universities,” Dr Pataki added.
She is a leader of women within the ministry of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa where she served both in the province and as trans-nationally President covering Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Currently she is still serving as vice president in the province and continue to support her husband's ministry as president at her local congregation William Mpamba..Solomondale, Dikgale, Botlokwa and Mamabolo area. She continues to provide spiritual support, social obligations, and emotional support to the group in the church and in the community. A mother to young and old.
Dr Pataki is also the co-founder and an ambassador of the Thursdays-in-Black - campaign in Limpopo province which is an international campaign by the churches standing against gender-based violence.
Dr Mmameno Pataki won the Best Community Doctor Award.
