Former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
The corruption case against disgraced former parliamentary speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has been transferred to the Pretoria High Court following her brief appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate Court on Tuesday morning.
Mapisa-Nqakula who maintained her innocence was served with an indictment of the charges against her and is facing 12 counts of corruption, and one of money laundering. The charges relate to her time as Defence Minister when she allegedly solicited and received bribes amounting to R4.5 million from a defence contractor.
Mapisa-Nqakula is out on R50 000 bail. The matter was adjourned to October 16, 2024, for pre-trial processes at the Pretoria High Court.
As this matter headed to trial, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed through spokesperson Henry Mamothame that the State was ready and had enough evidence.
Mamothane said: “We believe we have sufficient evidence for us to ventilate this matter in a court of law, but as you may know, that decision lies solemnly with the judge. But we believe we have gathered sufficient evidence for us to prosecute Mapisa-Nqakula.”
