Mbongeni Ngema Spirit Lives On





The life of the legendary writer, director and producer Mbongeni Ngema of Sarafina fame was celebrated in style by friends, family and fans at the Playhouse Company in Durban on Wednesday.

Ngema’s daughter MaNgema read a tribute written by his uncle Nhlanhla who was overwhelmed by the passing of his brother who died in a car crash while on his way back from the funeral in the Eastern Cape.

Nhlanhla who thanked everyone who attended the memorial service of his brother on January 3, 2024 said: “Dear family and friends, today as we gather to honour the memory of my beloved brother Mbongeni Ngema, I am filled with both sadness and gratitude. Mbongeni was a remarkable soul whose presence in our lives was as a gift that will forever be cherished. His passion for life was contagious, his laughter was infectious and his kindness knew no boundaries,” his brother said.

“Mbongeni’s dedication to his family, friends, and community was unwavering, leaving a mark in all who had the privilege of knowing him. His creativity and talent as an artist were unparalleled, bringing joy and inspiration to countless hearts through his music, storytelling and performances.”

He said Mbogeni Ngema’s legacy will continue to resonate through the melodies of his songs and the powerful narratives he shared with the world. “Though he is no longer with us in the physical sense, Mbongeni’s love, wisdom and passion live on in each one of us. Let us honour his memory by embracing the values he held dear, spreading kindness and by continuing to pursue the dreams that he had with dedication in life,” said

Stimela Sase Zola hit maker was born in 1955 in Verulan in Durban is known for his sterling work of producing Woza Albert, Asinamali , Safarina and  The Lion King.

He released several albums in the music industry such as Jive Madlokovu, Township Fever, Laduma, Woza My Fohloza which included the hit song Stimela Sase Zola.

He received a lifetime achievement award from the Naledi Theatre Awards in 2014.
