The brawl between African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi and ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula is scorching and attention-grabbing as their gloves are off in the eyes of the public.

Mbalula announced that the national working committee (NWC) is ready to implement the decision of the national executive committee (NEC) to reconfigure party provincial structures in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. The decision comes after the two provinces performed poorly in the recent elections. The ANC won 34.76% of the May 29 provincial ballot, compared with 50.2% five years ago. The Democratic Alliance, which supported Lesufi’s nomination, got 27.4% of the vote and the Economic Freedom Fighters 12.9%. KZN got 17% electoral support. The ANC last year won 40 percent of the vote, falling from 57% in 2019.

Lesufi had an interview with Clement Manyathela on his show on Tuesday. He said the NEC's decision will go a long way in helping the provinces turn things around.

"So for the National Executive Committee, which is the highest decision-making body of the ANC to take almost three days, to say let's evaluate performance, of say Gauteng and KZN. Let's check what went wrong, let's check what kind of support we need to give them, to me it's pleasing,” said Panyaza.

Mbalula in a letter instructed Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) leaders not to engage with the media following the recent decision to reconfigure the provincial executive committees (PECs) for losing the elections.

Mbalula made it clear that he was the only one mandated to speak on the NEC decisions about the two provinces.

The request was extended to all spokespersons, leaders, and members of the ANC and its structures, urging them not to make any pronouncements on the matter.

The reconfiguration process will be explained to the ANC's KZN and Gauteng Provincial Executive Committees (PECs) by Tuesday next week.

Some ANC sources from Gauteng confirmed that Mbalula tried very hard to disband them.
