Gauteng Premier and provincial chairperson of the ANC Panyaza Lesufi said for the ANC to return to its former glory again, it needed to properly assess the situation on the ground and not misdiagnose the problems that saw the party failing to achieve more than 50% during the recent national and provincial elections.
He also said the ANC ship is sinking, the sooner the ANC realise that and save it the better.
“It can’t be business as usual and that’s what scares me that we’ve lost power but we still behave as if nothing happened. The ship is sinking and this ship is sinking at a faster rate. Instead of all of us trying to check and save this ship from sinking, we are squabbling over who must take ownership of the ship. You can take the ship, but it will be at the belly of the sea and it will be meaningless,” he said.
“We must either adapt or we perish. We must either adapt or we die, we must either adapt or close shop. And comrades it is not going to assist anyone to finger point and say this province has made us to lose, all of us averagely as a country we have achieved 40% and that’s a loss, and we must (clean) thintha ourselves and rise and rebuild this movement because there is no other movement for us except the ANC,” he said.
He said this during the ANC two-day PEC Lekgotla in Johannesburg geared to combat unorthodox behaviour within the party on Sunday at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
“We must rise and dust ourselves up and rebuild this movement. This is because there is no other movement that we have except the ANC. Comrades, you might be a doctor, you might be an engineer. It does not matter whether you are an educated professional (engineer or doctor). The reality is that, if the ANC goes, it is going to be difficult for all of us to survive...Parties like the DA are against transformation."
Lesufi said however that the moment the ANC is removed from power and replaced by the DA black people are going to feel the pain.
With regard to corruption, the ANC Gauteng provincial chairperson said most of the corruption in government departments was committed by officials and not ANC members.
“But most corruption is mainly committed by government officials. We endure the blame whilst they are sabotaging the state. The ANC must be the priority now at all government levels. It must be the authority of everything in government. We have governmentisation of ANC. All ANC problems find their way to the State. If the ANC is unstable, in that particular region or province, even the government of that particular region and province will be unstable. But we must find the mechanism to stop that rot,” said Lesufi.
Lesufi warned ANC members not to celebrate the former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president, Floyd Shivambu’s decision to join the MK Party as the ANC faces a similar problem.
“Floyd Shivambu from the EFF to MK Party it can’t be seen as a non-entity, it’s a historic event and as the leadership of the ANC we must analyse it in a manner that will strengthen the presence of the ANC. If we are going to be quick to celebrate the departure of comrade Floyd from the EFF we will forget that our self we are going through a departure of members of the ANC to MK Party, that we still going through that particular process. So we manage this departure in a manner that we don’t get easily excited, we might be experienced. When UDM was established they came out of this political party called the ANC, when COPE was established they came out of ANC, when MK was formed they came out of the ANC. The departure of Floyd is a double edge sword that we need to manage carefully.”
