Legendary soccer star and former Kaizer Chiefs legend and Bafana Bafana Doctor Khumalo has described the late Pirates defender Papi Khomane as a humble person who was disciplined in and outside the football pitch.
Papi, who also played for the South African national soccer team and his mother, Rita Khomane, died in a car accident on Saturday.
The 49-year-old retired from football in 2007 having played at least 150 games for the Soweto giants, earning nine caps for Bafana Bafana between 1998 and 2000.
Khumalo said: “He was disciplined but he also liked jokes. He wasn’t a reckless defender. You cannot mention good defenders like Dan Malesela and not mention him.”
Like father like son, Papi’s dad Yster Khomane also played for Orlando Pirates as a defender.
Pirates said in a statement: “Papi and his father Yster, who played for the Buccaneers in the late 70s, were one of the rare father-son duos in the club’s history. This familial legacy is a testament to the deep connection the Khomane family has with the club.
“However, we cannot speak of Papi and Yster Khomane without honouring the remarkable woman behind their successes, Mrs. Rita Khomane. Rita was the cornerstone of support for both her husband and son. Her unwavering presence at our home matches was a testament to her dedication and love for the game and our club.
“On behalf of Orlando Pirates, we convey our heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Khomane family and pledge our profound moral support.”
