Polokwane Mayor John Makoro continues to silence his critics by leading Polokwane Municipality to win the ANC ZK Mathews Award for the best performing Municipality and Caucus in the country in 2024.
This achievement was announced officially during the ANC January 8 anniversary celebrations at the Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on 11 January 2024.
This announcement happens barely a month after President Cyril Ramaphosa gave thumbs up to Polokwane Mayor John Mpe for leading a clean municipality during his recent visit to Polokwane Municipality.
ANC Peter Mokaba Regional Spokesperson Adolph Rapetswa said in the same wavelength, we congratulate the ANCWL Milo Malatjie Branch in Ward 13 Polokwane Sub-region for becoming the second runner-up in the Charlotte Maxeke award which recognises the best performing ANCWL branch.
Rapetswa said:“We are proud of the branch for having reached this far and hope it’ll embolden them to continue with their excellent work. The ANC is proud that the impressive work of the leadership of the Municipality under the Political Management Team led by Executive Mayor Cde Makoro John Mpe, Members of the Mayoral Committee and all ANC councillors has now been recognised at the highest level in the organisation. Polokwane Municipality is the Capital City of Limpopo and occupies a strategic position as the socio-economic and logistics hub of the province. The City thus shoulders great responsibility to shape the economic trajectory of not only the region but the entire province.”
Rapetswa further said the ZK Mathews Award comes at a time when Polokwane Municipality’s efforts to ensure proper governance and financial management has seen the Municipality being upgraded to Grade 6 in terms of Upper Limits Notice for Members of Municipal Councils.
He told The Azanian that this implies that the Municipality is implementing upper limits that are equivalent to metropolitan municipalities.
Rapetswa said further, the move to grade 6 denotes that the municipality is on the right path towards becoming the first metropolitan municipality in Limpopo Province.
He confirmed that Polokwane Municipality led by its consummate leader Mayor Mpe has also retained an unqualified audit opinion for the third consecutive financial year following years of poor audit outcomes.
“The ANC in the Region will continue to support the political leadership of the Municipality together with the Development of Northern Water and Sanitation as well as Lepelle Northern water on finding sustainable provision of water. We also commend the municipality for completing the Seshego hybrid water treatment plant which has improved the supply from 1.8ML/day to 8ML/day,” Rapetswa said.
“We once more congratulate the Municipality and believe that the award is well-deserved. We wish our deployees in Polokwane all the best and more success in their current endeavours to build a thriving Municipality for the residents of this great City of Stars.”
Polokwane Mayor Mpe said he will thrive to ensure that Polokwane Municipality known as the City of Stars continues to put Limpopo on the map both economically and ensuring that the Auditors General books are intact.
Meanwhile, Polokwane Municipality known as the City of Stars under the leadership of its consummate Mayor Mpe has embarked on setting a benchmark in integrating sports, recreation and cultural tourism to drive significant economic growth in Limpopo.
