President Cyril Ramaphosa has told ANC members during the party’s January 8th statement at Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha, Cape Town that weak branch tendencies gave birth to the ANC to lose May 29, 2024 national and provincial elections.
Ramaphosa who faced over 22,000 supporters and members at the stadium also blamed lack of basic service delivery and factors including crime, poverty, gender-based violence, high cost of living, and unemployment as some of the reasons why the ANC's electoral support declined over the years, especially in 2024.
“One of the reasons we lost the elections is because our branches have become weak, they are not functioning the way they are supposed to. That is why we lost elections. The ANC branches have led to the party losing its ability to govern on its own," he said.
The ANC failed to retain its status as the ruling party after its support declined to 40% nationally which was the first time that the party of OR Tambo and Nelson Mandela lost the elections since democracy.
Ramaphosa acknowledged that losing the elections was a setback but said they would come back stronger.
He also said such setbacks can halt or derail the progress of socio-economic transformation.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what action the ANC is going to take against the provinces of Gauteng and KZN for losing elections in 2024.
