South African singer Tyla Laura Seethel has won Best African Music Performance Award during the 66th Grammy Awards ceremony held at the prestigious Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The talented artist earned the accolade for her sensational song titled “Water” which has not only sparked viral TikTok challenge but also climbed the charts to secure a spot on the esteemed Billboard Hot 100.
Tyla's meteoric rise to international fame began with the release of her single "Water" in 2023, which swiftly soared into the top ten in sixteen countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States. Notably, this achievement marked the first time in 55 years that a South African soloist had entered the US Billboard Hot 100. Consequently, Tyla's exceptional talent and undeniable impact on the music scene led her to be honoured with the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024.
Scheduled for release on 22 March 2024, Tyla's self-titled debut album is highly anticipated by fans and industry insiders alike. This remarkable achievement has solidified her position as a rising star in the music industry, and she was nominated alongside renowned artists such as Burnaboy, David, Asake, Ayra star, and Olamide.
Tyla who is also a songwriter, was born and raised in Johannesburg. Her historic win at such a young age has made her the youngest South African to secure this prestigious Grammy Award. Overwhelmed with joy, Tyla exclaimed, "What? Oh my gosh, guys, this is crazy! I never thought I'd say I won a Grammy at 22 years old," during her heartfelt acceptance speech.
